and oppressive reality. In addition, to add to her problems she is soon pregnant after her marriage. The following paper examines the symbolism of fertility and sterility in Henrik Ibsens
"Hedda Gabler." Hedda As mentioned, Hedda is a young woman who is unhappy with her life. She was recently married and comes home to find herself incredibly dissatisfied
with life in general. She is not in love with her husband, and has obviously found that married life, and perhaps even sexual encounters, are nothing to be thrilled about.
To top it off she is also pregnant, and thus incredibly stuck in her position in life. As one author notes, "Hedda tells Brack how bored she was on her
honeymoon and how she has no special feeling for the house Tesman has gone to great lengths to buy for her, under the false impression that she desperately wanted to
live there" (SparkNotes). This illustrates how trapped she feels and also helps us see how she feels she has no future with much of this focus perhaps relating to
her position of being pregnant. Through this pregnancy, her ability to be incredibly fertile, she is truly trapped in a world that is made only for women. Hedda is a
woman that is under the oppressive realities of a patriarchal society and her fertility is what makes her so incredibly desired by this society. She does not feel as though
