a young man who takes a "day off" to be with his friends before they separate, possibly forever, it is also a mystical examination of what it means to be young, and in fact, what it means to be alive. This paper discusses how each of the four major ethical traditions (Biblical, Utilitarian, Deontological, Greek) is presented in the film, and then presents reaction to the tradition as shown. Biblical Philosophical Tradition This tradition is most often discussed in conjunction with hermeneutics, or the science of interpreting Scripture. We want to use this tradition specifically in the context of behavior. The source that describes Biblical passages has selected those that deal with behavior; for instance, we read that the first passage to consider is "Leviticus 24.5-9 in which rather than take vengeance on another that one should love your neighbor as yourself.1 The other "main Old Testament passage is in Jeremiah 31.33 in which we find God saying that someday He would put the Law within the hearts of his people."2 This implies that at some point, the Law will be more than a set of rules and regulations, but a living code of behavior.3 In the New Testament, the Sermon on the Mount expands on this idea, when Jesus says that "He has not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it."4 Theologians argue over the correct interpretation of the text at this point but this source suggests that what Jesus is saying here is that the point of these examples is "to not worry about following the letter of the Law but to get behind the Law to the spirit of it."5 This perspective doesnt seem to make a lot of sense when applied to this film, since Ferris Bueller obeys neither the spirit ...
