to the 21st century. This paper summarizes the book and whether or not it is a good effort. Discussion Fernando Pico is one of Puerto Ricos leading historians and the
author of several books about the island, including Puerto Rico 1898, an extremely well-regarded study of the complex events that overtook the island when the United States invaded in July,
1898. Many studies of the Spanish-American War overlook the unrest and violence that engulfed the island, but Pico has studied events closely and in doing so, called into question much
of the other scholarship about Puerto Rico, the War, and reactions to the U.S. invasion. Picos obvious expertise has made him a leading expert on Puerto Rico and the Caribbean,
and given him a great deal of influence over the way in which we now understand Puerto Rico and its society (Markus Wiener Publishers, 2009). In this book, he examines
the ways in which events in other countries, especially legal and commercial developments, impacted the common people of the island (Markus Wiener Publishers, 2009). It is also the story of
how those same people have struggled since the American invasion to "take control of their political, social and economic lives" (Markus Wiener Publishers, 2009). This book is an expanded version
of Picos earlier Historia general and is distinguished by Picos use of primary sources and his knowledge of Puerto Rican historiography, which is "broad and deep" (Markus Wiener Publishers, 2009).
The work has been nominated as Outstanding Academic book of the Year by Choice Magazine (Markus Wiener Publishers, 2009). The book was first published in Spanish, so this paper discusses
