is filled with hope and despair in the lives of African Americans and a story filled with the powerful notion of love and growth. The following paper illustrates how Wilsons
play is one about fences and how the theme of fences involves building and nurturing a garden of love and family. Fences Rose is the mother/wife in the
play and throughout the play a fence is being built at her request, or demand. The fence is symbolic of many things and one of the indications that this fence
is about love and family comes when the men are discussing why they are building this fence in the first place. Cory states, "I dont see why Mama want a
fence around the yard noways" and Troy responds that he does not understand it either, then stating, "What the hell she keeping out with it? She aint got nothing nobody
want" (Wilson 61). It is Bono who steps in and shows us that the fence is not to keep people out, but rather some people like fences to keep things
in and "Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you" (Wilson 61). Rose loves her family and is constantly trying to nurture them and provide a
powerfully fertile environment for them all. She also loves to garden and this becomes a very vital part of the theme of fences in terms of keeping things in and
nurturing them. Most gardens all but require a fence, even if only for asthetic reasons. Fences create a sort of sanctuary for gardens, and they do certainly keep things out
while keeping things in. Fences protect what is nurtured from the outside world. In realistic terms they protect against animals and people tromping on a garden and in the symbolic
