family from getting too close-or from running away. The play is set in the 1950s, and its protagonist is Troy Maxson, a garbage collector (Wilson, 2005). The
time period of the play is important, because the 1950s were a decade unlike any other in American history. The nation had just fought its way through World War
II, and was one of only two major powers left in the world, the other being the Soviet Union. But the USSR wasnt yet a threat and the 1950s
were a decade of prosperity and peace, in which the middle class gained economic ground and even the poor were a little better off. It was a time when
a man like Troy Maxson could still believe in the "American Dream". Or should have believed in it, but Troy does not. Hes bitter and resentful because of the
way hes been treated by whites. It turns out that Troy played baseball in the Negro Leagues, but never made it to the Majors, largely because whites were not
accepted in the leagues at the time Troy was playing (Wilson, 2005). He remains bitter over his inability to play the game he loved. Troy is a very conflicted
character: he creates a strong sense of responsibility in his family and yet cheats on his wife (Wilson, 2005). But when his mistress dies and leaves their child an
orphan, Troy brings it home to raise when he might easily have abandoned it (Wilson, 2005). He seems to be always torn in two, between doing the right thing
and doing the easy thing, and sometimes he wavers in one direction, sometimes the other. His relationship with his sons is problematic, particularly with Cory, the older boy, because he
