sexuality to further their desires. The following paper examines if Chaucers Canterbury Tales are feminist or anti-feminist. The paper examines the Wife of Baths Tale, the Lawyers Tale and the
Millers Tale. The paper ultimately illustrates how it is perhaps neither, but rather only a reflection of women in general during the time period. Feminist or Antifeminist In
the story presented by the Wife of Bath we have a knight who has been accused of raping a woman. His punishment is to seek out the answer to what
women want. If he discovers the answer, laid down by the queen, then his life will be spared. He travels and finds a witch who tells him that she will
give him the answer of what women want if he promises to marry her after he is granted freedom by the queen. He agrees to this for he has little
choice. She tells him that what women want is to essentially be the boss. He takes this answer to the queen and she agrees that this is the correct answer.
He returns to the witch who then tells him he can have an ugly and faithful wife in her, or a beautiful and unfaithful woman. He allows her the choice
and she thus chooses to be a beautiful and faithful woman. This story presents us with a powerful woman, a witch, who knows the answers to many of lifes
questions. She is willing to give this knight the answer to his question if he obey her in one way or another. She is ultimately in control of the situation
