the story of a woman who is essentially misdiagnosed in a society of men. The field of medicine during Gilmans time period was very much a mans field that only
seemed to possess knowledge about the physical condition of men. As such women were not treated for their conditions that were often very different from men. In Gilmans story we
have a woman suffering from mental stress. The men in her life see her condition as physical, not mental, and insist that rest is what she needs. The following paper
provides a feminist perspective of Gilmans story. "Yellow Wallpaper" As mentioned, the woman in this particular story is at the mercy of men who feel they know what
is best for her. Her husband is the primary caretaker, though her brother, who is also a physician, has voiced his medical knowledge as well, both urging her to do
nothing but rest. We sense that her husband, and men in general, control her and her situation when she first speaks of him stating, "John laughs at me, of course,
but one expects that in marriage...John is a physician, and perhaps--(I would not say it to a living soul, of course, but this is dead paper and a great relief
to my mind)--perhaps that is one reason I do not get well faster. You see he does not believe I am sick!" (Gilman). Because her husband is a physician
in a field of study that only addresses physical conditions he has absolutely no understanding of mental strain and how it perhaps influences women very powerfully. The primary illness is
that which relates to confinement. This woman is a creative individual and she is told she cannot write for it is not good for her mental state. The problem is
