While it is a story about a man, a scientist, and a monster, who is also a man, there are many aspects of the story that speak to the feminine intellect. The following paper presents a feminist reaction to the novel by Shelley. Feminist Reaction to Frankenstein by Shelley One of the most important, and perhaps most often overlooked, aspects of Shelleys novel is how masculine it is while having been written by a woman. Shelley speaks about the mind of a man immersed in science, and speaks of a mans world with very little concern for women in any respect. In fact, the two primary women are Frankensteins mother who dies, and his fianc? who is killed. Neither seems to be a strong or independent woman and this is intriguing considering that Shelley, the daughter of a very powerful and infamous feminist, was powerful enough to have a novel published when women were not accepted as writers in society. In looking at all the above mentioned one could perhaps argue that Shelley was accustomed to living in a mans world, surrounded by men, and thus understood men and wrote as one, writing about a man. She was raised by her father and surrounded by many intellectual and literary men and it just makes sense that she would likely understand a mans mind more than a womans and thus be able to write about a man, science and a monster. From a completely different perspective, however, there are many elements to the story that speak of the irresponsible nature of men. For example, as soon as Frankenstein sees his creation is alive, and horrific and disfigured, he runs away. ...
