a novelist Mary Wollstonecraft was more of an outright activist for womens rights. Both women, however, seem to have incredibly similar ideas about the position of women in the society
of their times. Even if Jane Austen did not actively seek to change the world, her books spoke of women as intelligent individuals who should be equal to men in
many ways, for it is men and women who make society and make the race of mankind. Wollstonecraft, however, was much more verbal, as well as active, about her opinions
concerning the position of women in her society. Bearing in mind that the two women were obviously different in many ways, we present the following paper which examines the
work of the two women as it relates to feminist ideals. The first portion of the paper discusses the novels "Northanger Abbey," "Pride and Prejudice" and "Emma" written by Jane
Austen. The second portion of the paper discusses the life and works of Mary Wollstonecraft, focusing on "Wrongs of Woman." The paper then concludes with a discussion and summary of
the similarities and differences in the perspectives of the two women. Jane Austen During the time in which Jane Austen wrote it was necessary for women to find
men who had money if they wished to do more than survive. Women did not work, save as servants and perhaps teachers, and as such they looked to financial support
through husbands. If their family was wealthy they may be lucky enough to receive a salary of money throughout their life, but for the most part money equaled survival. This
provides us with a very important element which allows us to envision some of Austens feminist views. And, in the works "Northanger Abbey" and "Pride and Prejudice" we can see
