One of the most noted female science fiction authors in history was Mary Shelly. Shelly
wrote "Frankenstein" in 1818 during a time when a womans place was considered, at least by the male components of society, to be in the home not behind the typewriter.
"Frankenstein" has since become the most recognized science fiction book in the world. Shelly, by every justification, deserves the recognition of being a feminist. How else could
a woman who is willing to buck societal expectation to perceive her dreams be classified? Yet on first inspection "Frankenstein" appears to hold little in terms of feminist content.
Interestingly, however, the lives of the fictional Frankenstein and the author of the book had many similarities. Both were treated as objects rather than feeling beings, both were shunned
and viewed as potentially dangerous. Both were misfits in a society which expected one thing in terms of proper behavior and demeanor but got something that was completely different.
From some perspectives this underlying theme could indeed be interpreted to apply to the societal situation which the feminist movement as a whole has revolted against. The primary
perpetrator of this situation in Mary Shellys "Frankenstein" could be identified as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, Frankensteins fictional creator. Indeed, Victors role in this work of science fiction could be
said to symbolize the patriarchal system which has kept women in subjugation practically since the beginning of our reign on earth. For the purposes of this paper, therefore, Dr.
Frankenstein will be referred to quite frequently as a symbolic element of the plot. In this connotation he will become "Victor" as opposed to Victor.
