was inspired by a Newsweek/Gallop opinion poll that revealed that 56 percent of US women identified themselves as "feminists" (FMF, 2001). Numerous polls since that time have substantiated the idea
that most American women view themselves as feminists, with two-thirds of all young women indicating that this political stance is part of their self image. Furthermore, research indicates that many
men also view themselves as supporters of womens rights. Therefore, one of the principal tenets of this organization is that feminists are in the majority in the US and should
be politically empowered. To facilitate this empowerment, the FMF sponsors research and public policy development, public education programs, grassroots organizational projects, leadership training and development programs, and participates in organizational
forums on issues pertaining to womens equality and empowerment (FMF, 2001). One can either join the FMF or merely make donation online. Donations are tax deductible. The benefits of
membership include receiving the foundations quarterly newsletter and e-mail action alerts, plus special invitations to events, briefings, conferences and seminars (FMF, 2001). One of their current initiatives is a national
clinic defense project whose goal is to defend womens health clinics from anti-abortion extremists. This initiative has already successfully defended 94 clinics in the greater Los Angeles area that anti-abortionist
groups had targeted. One such group announced earlier their plans to make Los Angeles the first abortion-free city in the country, However, 7,000 FMF volunteers countered their blockade, allowing these
