therapy shares with systems theory the belief that the therapist is an agent
for social change through the process of exploring cultural processes and the

groups. Religiosity and the extended family are two such strengths that are frequently found. Within the helping professions, many professionals consider themselves as eclectic, or able to use
a myriad of styles and theories in working with the diverse cultures, families and individuals. One of the theories used by many (if not most) therapists is systems theory.
Another, newer, perspective is that of the feminist. There is a determined need within the feminist movement to provide the fuel for interest in the existence of women, the
nature of that existence, the contributions and detractions they may have had within certain cultures at different times. It is female centered as opposed to male identified. The
result of the patriarchal society has been the cultural devaluation of women. The feminist approach to therapy takes into consideration the system while focusing on dysfunctional gender roles and
the avenues to change. Systems theory provides a means to understanding the interactions between the culture, community, family and individuals that highlights influences, causality and dynamics. Systems
theory may be generalized and, or, specific to certain groups. The most common unit for which systems theory is applied within the helping profession is the family.
The systems approach looks at the family as an organized whole, with a hierarchical structure of interrelated parts. Working with the family, systems therapists focus on cohesion, adaptability, and
communication structures. It is understood that the family provides the quantity and quality of sources of moral authority encountered by each family member. "Family cohesion consists of such
