A 12 page overview of the societal changes which occurred during these two decades in regard to the relationships between men and women. Notes a number of factors combined to effect these changes. These were inclusive of the subservient role of women throughout history, inequalities in the workplace, and the perception of being bound into domesticity. Concludes that to judge the changes in gender roles which occurred during the 1960s is the same as judging any facet of human evolution. The relationship between men and women is no more static than any other aspect of our culture and society. Women had witnessed the breaking down of racial discrimination, and age-old attitudes about sexuality and other barriers, they were ready to implement equal changes in their own lives. 1960s. Women of the 1950s occupied strictly defined hierarchies in comparison with men. They were expected to be the homemakers, the wives, the mothers, the caregivers. Women
were alternately placed on a pedestal and held in subservience. With the advent of the 1960s, that decade which we often associate with a radical decline of societal
mores and ethics, that decade we commonly describe as being rampant with sex, drugs, and rock and roll, womens roles would begin to change dramatically. This change was not
without hardships and hard feelings on both sides of the gender camp, however. Men regarded women as abandoning their traditional responsibilities and women regarding men more in terms of
their history of patriarchal domination than in terms of their personal familial and associative relationships under which they had previously related to them. The 1960s would usher feminism and the
womens movement into the world. It would be a movement which would shake the foundations of our traditional societal structure. Different women took different approaches to effect
the changes which they saw as necessary in regard to their traditional gender roles. Some joined together with women such as Pat Mainardi and other women of the Redstockings,
a group of radical New York women who aggressively sought change (Mainardi, 1969). Others chose to work patiently behind the scenes to improve the societal status women and to
fight sexism. Mainardi (1969) made the pronouncement which still rings true today: "The personal is the political." By targeting the personal aspects of their relationships with men
