for the most part, were generally seen as sexual symbols in the past, or symbols of motherhood and the ideal female. They were wives, mothers, or lovers and that was
essentially the extent of their roles in the film industry. However, as feminism has become more and more of a reality women are seen in different perspectives. We see them
as intelligent players in the world of humanity, not just sexual entities. This, of course, does not mean that many films today do not still portray women as much more
than wives, mothers, or lovers, but it is to say that more and more films come out that help us to define feminism and illustrate that women are more than
physical and sexual identities. With this in mind the following paper examines films past and present, illustrating some of the changes, as well as illustrating how some things remain the
same. The paper then discusses specific films that have helped to change our ideas as they relate to feminist issues. The Past and Present As mentioned, in the films
of the past, the past that involves the beginning and early days of film, we note that women were seen as nothing more than individuals who were mothers, wives, or
lovers. In many of the classics we see women having jobs, but they only seem to have jobs so that they can find a husband. They may even be the
center of the film, being the primary character, but they are seen as funny or women out to get a husband. There were, of course, those films which presented
women as independent women and complex women, such as the classic film "Notorious." In this film Ingrid Bergman plays a woman who is a spy. She is a strong woman,
