For example, during the Victorian times, and well beyond, women were seen as being incredibly different than men in intellect, strength, and even in relationship to medical science as women were fragile and perhaps less human than men. With such a past feminism has long been necessary in order to bring society to a level wherein women and men are both seen as human beings, if human beings with different conditions or realities. The following paper examines how feminism has changed the social expectations of men and women. The paper also examines if feminist criminology offers valid explanations in relationship to the explanations of crime. Feminism and Feminist Issues Today As mentioned, in Victorian times, as an example of a time prior to true feminist thought, women were seen as very different from men, almost as though they were not the same animal. One author, who writes on feminism and womens sports (an important social expectation) notes, "In the Victorian era, the physiology of women was the number one reason society limited her participation in many activities. Strangely enough, the assumption of womens health being governed by her womb was not seriously challenged until later in the twentieth century (Powell 14)" (Owen, 2002). If a woman had any kind of physical condition, any complaint, it was almost always reduced to a connection with her womb and as such women were not seen as physical creatures in nearly the same way as men. For example, if a woman had an earache it had something to do with her womb. If a man had an earache it was simply that; an earache.
