female writers are making strides today, it was much more difficult in the older days of the nation. During colonial America for example, Anne Bradstreet stood out as a prolific
poet. She was one of the first to publish in her genre in the colonies, and being a woman, this was certainly a much more admirable feat. Mary White Rowlandson
was another who published in the colonies early on. Both of these women contributed to the fabric of America as they are a part and parcel of American history. It
is clear that a few female authors came about during the early years of America and that it was perseverance and determination that would likely propel them to fame. Resiliency
was also necessary as being a woman came with hardships. They had to be resilient in order to tolerate the blows that would inevitably come. Later on, many female authors--and
male authors as well--would spill their guts in terms of slavery and what it was like to be a slave. While difficult to hear, these discourses are important and add
to American historical knowledge. Jacobs, in Life of a Slave Girl of course incorporates the elements of resiliency and determination as she lives her life under horrible circumstances. She writes:
"When he told me I was made for his use, made to obey his command in everything; that I was nothing but a slave, whose will must and should surrender
