aches, desires, and hopes were as real, complex and varied as every other person. This is a book which attempts to debunk the myths which suggest their existence was
unimportant and to elevate the readers understanding of these women and their struggles throughout the slavery era. Summary and Analysis of "Arent I a Woman?"
Arent I a Woman is a book which discusses at length the stereotypes of southern black women during the time of slavery.
According to this book, there tends to be a severe generalization about black women from that era and in this process of oversimplification, the rich history and individuality of these
women has been nearly lost and forgotten. According to this book, black women were at a real disadvantage. Not only
were they black, but as women they were considered less desirable on both counts. The author reminds her readers how history often forgets these people and their impact on
the world. Their identities were constantly negated and they were devalued for nearly everything which they were. Contrast this with
the role of white women and their duties. There are certainly striking differences between how black slave women lived their lives and how white women did. As women,
