- the vagina represents the direct route to pregnancy. A "muscular tunnel that connects the uterus to the outside of the body" (Malpani et al, 1999, p. Chap2.htm), the
vagina is the point at which womens menstruation flow exits the body, as well as the point of entrance for semen. Its small appearance is deceiving, in that it
is formed to adjust to something as large as a babys head. Commonly referred to as the womb, a womans uterus is where growth occurs once the egg
has been fertilized. It is here that the fertilized egg typically takes nine months to develop into a human infant. Located in the pelvis and positioned behind the
urinary bladder, the uterus pear-shaped appearance is only as large as a persons fist; however, this seemingly tiny baby holder is comprised of the endometrium, "a very rich lining" (Malpani
et al, 1999, p. Chap2.htm) that serves to house the fertilized egg. If semen and egg are not brought together, no pregnancy will take place; as such, the uterine
lining expels the egg during menstruation. The cervix, located at the uterus neck, adjoins the vagina to the uterus and helps to keep the environment clear of bacteria with its
special mucus. At the same time, this mucus helps to carry semen to the fertilized egg as it waits in the uterus. The fallopian tubes, which resemble skinny
strings of spaghetti, are located on either side of the uterus. Working as passageways, the two tubes open out into the abdominal cavity allowing for the egg to travel
from the ovaries. Millions upon millions of cilia (little hairs) work in tandem to help the egg move along the pathway. Once conception has occurred, the fallopian tubes
