In three different stories we note these harsh conditions for the female protagonists in The Awakening" by Kate Chopin, "Souls Belated" by Edith Wharton, and "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, The following paper examines these characters and the choices they made in relationship to their situations. Edna in "The Awakening" In Chopins novel we have Edna who is a reasonably strong willed woman of intelligence. She understands that she cannot live in society as a woman is meant to and she yearns for another man that is not her husband. She does not really care about the social expectations, or so it seems, as she struggles to find her own independence. In essence, Edna is not happy with her role as a woman in that she is a wife and mother. She wants to be more in life, yet society restricts her in her gender. She believes that through an affair she can find her way out of her restrictive and oppressive reality. But, after too long involved in such endeavors she discovers that this is not the case. She tries to escape through passion, but finds that she is still a woman in a society that offers no options to women aside from being a wife and a mother. Edna chooses to rid herself of these definitions and still is not happy because she has no future. She realizes that no matter how much she runs she will never find happiness in her society for she can never support herself and she can never succeed on ...
