many of these women are put in positions where they have little choice but to become involved in crime if they wish to survive. And, one aspect of women in
prison, or female offenders, involves the condition of motherhood. The following paper examines the problems associated with female offenders who are also mothers. The paper primarily argues that these women,
mainly young women, are mothers for of many reasons, not the least of which is associated with freedom from their family. Many young women become pregnant in order to perhaps
get out of their dysfunctional homes and start their own lives, lives which do not always turn out the way they intended. Female Offenders: Mothers When a young
woman has no options because of her family life she will often look to what she believes to be the biggest part of being an adult, that being motherhood. Young
women from homes that are violent and abusive or impoverished will often envision that if they had a family of their own, a husband, and a child, their lives would
be better. This is a condition for young women in many situations, and thus also applies to women who ultimately commit crimes who are, more often than not, women from
abusive and dysfunctional families. In addition, when we understand that women of various cultures, cultures that are not white, often grow up in a very restrictive or abusive patriarchal family
situation, they will seek any way out they can find and when their culture instills in them the understanding that they will be wives and mothers, that feels to be
