the result of vicious mal-intent. Rather, the typical female juvenile delinquent tends to make poor choices - often without realization of the long-term consequences of those choices. Our society cannot afford to overlook this significant social problem. Girls who engage in criminal activity as young teens go on to engage in far worse criminal activity as they grow older. This creates then a pattern of criminal activity that represents significant social and economic costs to both society and to the individual. Rehabilitation and education are the keys to combating this problem in our society. Furthermore, it is important that rehabilitation efforts focus on reintroducing these young women into society, in order that they may be able to relearn how to interact with society in a positive manner, thus changing the destructive cycle of their lives. The typical female juvenile delinquent in this country is between the ages of 14 and 16, comes from an ethnic minority, and lives in a poor neighborhood with a high crime rate (Juvenile Justice Experts Should Focus on Girls Unique Needs, 2000). Furthermore, it is typical that this child will have experienced some form of abuse - whether sexual, physical and/or emotional (Juvenile Justice Experts Should Focus on Girls Unique Needs, 2000). There are other characteristics as well, such as poor performance in school, and substance abuse among others (Juvenile Justice Experts Should Focus on Girls Unique Needs, 2000).
