It has not, however, been quite the subject for media discussion, as well as psychological discussion, as it has been in the past several years. The media plays a very
large role in how the female body is seen and how women feel about their bodies. This has proven to be a very serious issue for the self confidence of
many women, especially those with eating disorders who take what the media presents as literal and obtainable truth. As can readily be seen, even from this small introduction it
is obvious that female body image in America is a very important subject that is influencing the lives of many women, young and old. And, it seems that with each
changing image women are finding more and more ways to be unhappy with their body and to see themselves as abnormal. With this in mind the following paper examines the
evolution of the female body image in American history. The paper then focuses on the changes in the past decade and the conditions now. Female Body Image History
In offering up a brief history of the female body image we first go back to the 1890s. The ideal female body was plump, with a pale complexion, all of
which represented "wealth, an abundance of food and a refined indoor lifestyle" (Region of Peel, 2004). In the early 1900s the look involved corsets so that an hour glass look
could be achieved. The 1920s brought in the style of flat chested women with very slim hips. During the 50s and 60s there were many different ideals. There were women
who were full figured, such as Marilyn Monroe, who were considered sexy, yet there were also models such as Twiggy who illustrated that waif looks were in as well.
