such skill and joy into designing a movie Middle Earth" (Corliss 64). Introduction J.R.R. Tolkien is know for creating a world, if not a universe, that is full
of imaginary and powerful creatures. His stories are somewhat reflective of men and their history, especially in relationship to legends and lore that many cultures have in regards to mythical
beings or creatures. In "Fellowship of the Ring" we are given a story that is actually the first of three, though it can be read by itself. Like many of
his tales they are self contained, yet leave a great deal of room for further investigation as each tale tells us something new about the people and their history.
In 2001 a more than adequate rendition of "Fellowship of the Ring" was finally presented in film format. As one author states, it "has at last made its way into
a long-awaited cinematic adaptation" (Taylor 76). It is a film filled with powerfully images that perhaps Tolkien would have approved. However, like any film based on a novel, there is
much that is left out. And, interestingly enough, if it were up to anyone but Peter Jackson, the director and creator, there would have been even more cut out (Steinhart).
In the case of "Fellowship of the Ring" this is primarily due to time, for if all aspects of the novel were contained in this film it would not
have been almost 3 1/2 hours long but perhaps more like 6 to 9 hours long. However, it is a film that remained as true as possible to the original
