has a very long history in the United States, standing as the foundation of the nations government today. The following paper examines the history and nature of Federalism, as well
as providing an analysis of Federalism. Federalism In the beginning of this nations history there were the Federalists who believed, as noted,
in a very strong and central government. In addition, as one author notes, "They were somewhat pessimistic about human nature and believed that the government must resist the passions of
the general public. One of the governments prime functions was to maintain order" (U.S. History.com). However, at the same time, as noted by this author, they ultimately seemed to place
their faith in this form of government in just a few, a few governing elite (U.S. History.com). In relationship to a time prior
to Federalism it is noted that the nation waged war for their independence and then "established a confederation form of government that created a league of sovereign states" (Boyd). The
Articles of Confederation were seen as having many deficiencies and weaknesses and this urged many to seek a new Constitution (Boyd). This new Constitution involved the federal system, Federalism, which
created a government that was made up of states and a national government (Boyd). "Almost immediately upon its adoption, issues concerning state sovereignty and the supremacy of federal authority were
hotly debated and ultimately led to the Civil War" (Boyd). The conditions above were connected to what is known as the Federalist
