often used to teach programming languages in the classroom, but also at home. Many people learn how to program on their own with the use of multimedia. This was
not always the case. In the old days, computers were used much like calculators or for teaching programming, which may be construed as the "art and science of creating those
long lists of logico-mathematical instructions that tell the computer how to function and what to do" (Weinstein, 1999, p.38). Things have changed. Cutting edge computer technology has broken the mold
in respect to traditional teaching (Toch, 1991). Conceptual models are also relevant (Bracey, 1989). Teaching programming languages can be daunting, which is why multimedia is so well accepted. Still, learning
a language always involves the same things which are conceptual knowledge and syntactical knowledge in addition to strategic knowledge (Yoder, 2003). It has been found that conceptual models assist a
student of low-ability in BASIC instruction but high-ability students seem to not derive any benefit from that model (2003). The author explains that Piaget saw children as
"builders of their own intellectual models" and the author claims that children can build them too (Yoder, 2003). One way to accomplish this is with the use of a WebQuest
that had been created by Bernie Dodge (2003). WebQuests have a structured, inquiry-based methods to present compelling scenes that contain questions to answer for the student to resolve (2003).
It seems that the types of features contained in the WebQuest are some that are applicable in teaching a programming language as well. In studying the topic of teaching programming
languages with the use of multimedia, many things are gleaned. It seems that software design is important and properly designed multimedia packages can aid self-teaching. Certain features however emerge as
