people from long ago. Even though Homers Odyssey is a tale of adventure and intrigue one must realize that the social customs of the day were used within the literature.
If we read a book from the 20th century, for example, we will see many of our customs presented in the literature, allowing us to understand the story and the
setting. With that in mind we look back at Homers Odyssey and examine the incidents and significance of feasting. Feasting In one of the first instances concerning a
feast we see Minerva asking Telemachus about the feasting taking place at his house: "But tell me, and tell me true, what is the meaning of all this feasting,
and who are these people? What is it all about? Have you some banquet, or is there a wedding in the family- for no one seems to be bringing any
provisions of his own? And the guests- how atrociously they are behaving; what riot they make over the whole house; it is enough to disgust any respectable person who comes
near them" (Homer Book I). From this simple illustration we see that it was perhaps proper to bring food to a gathering which is in celebration. We also note
that whatever the customs of good behavior, these people are not observing them. In light of this we would assume that the people who are invited to a feast must
show respect, remain quiet and essentially behave themselves, not unlike any gathering today wherein people were eating someone elses offerings. We see a bit more of this feasting and
disrespect, and the expectations involved in proper attribute to one who offers a feast from the words of Telemachus who tells the suitors they are "shameless" and "insolent" and says
