The purpose here is to examine the 2002 Toyota Corolla Sedan CE, 2002 Honda Civic Sedan DX and 2002 Dodge Neon Sedan for the performance they can be expected to give in long-distance driving away from cities except perhaps for passing through them. Americans already had been driving more for both short- and long-range trips before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, but the result of the hugely negative effect of the attacks on the US airline industry has been that individuals are choosing to drive long distances now rather than fly. The purpose here is to choose the best of the three car models mentioned above, for the purpose not of tooling around in city traffic, but for routine use in driving long distances. Background As stated, Americans already were driving more than in past years before the terrorist attacks of September 11. All airline traffic was stopped for three days following the attacks, and those holding tickets for air travel for the next several weeks canceled those tickets by the hundreds. Thousands of scheduled passengers were unwilling to board commercial aircraft when those investigating the origins of the attacks had been unable to determine what parts of various airports security systems had been compromised. After airline schedules regained some sense of normalcy, the added time involved in passing through security inside the terminal resulted in so much time being added to that required to complete a trip that short trips frequently were more time efficient when accomplished on the ground.
