who go to Las Vegas in 1971, a social time of unrest and drugs, and embark on a life or experience that is nothing but drugs and partying and despair
in many ways. The book covers their time in Las Vegas and ends with little hope or true enlightenment. The following paper offers a summary of Hunter S. Thompsons book.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas In the beginning of the book we see Dr. Duke (a false name) and Dr. Gonzo (a lawyer) heading for Las Vegas
where they are supposed to be doing a story on the annual bikers race. Dr. Duke is a journalist and is immersed in the drug culture of the 1960s, with
the story taking place in 1971. The reader sees these two men, from the beginning, feeling the affects of drugs as they
are driving to Las Vegas. The narrator, Mr. Duke, says, "We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold" (Thompson 3).
His friend, and attorney, Mr. Gonzo was stripping off his shirt, pouring beer on his chest and obviously also experiencing the affects of drugs. They had a hundred miles more
to drive to reach Las Vegas and they were both clearly feeling the affects of drugs, with the narrator claiming it would be hard to keep it together long enough
for them to arrive. This begins the story, a story of these two men taking every drug they could possibly take throughout
the novel, becoming very psychotic in many ways, through drugs, and ultimately learning nothing but that perhaps they had damaged themselves in their time in Las Vegas.
