and self-interest. Initially, this premise seems callous, yet, a great deal of the literature on motivation can be interpreted to support this premise. In other words, anything can be considered
to fall under the characteristics of fear or self-interest. Even Nietzsche wrote, "Fear is the mother of morality; morality is the rationalization of self-interest" (Meyers, 1998). While this writer
agrees with the premise generally, this writer also believes that there are other forces that drive a person to act that cannot be cavalierly classified under fear or self-interest.
When addressing the issue of what motivates consumers to make a purchase, Gitomer reported there were four buying motives: fear, greed, vanity and guilt. As Gitomer commented, "They all seem
to have a negative twinge to them, and, in fact, the long-term of play on these motives will be negative" (1998). These are the four primary foundations for most commercials
and advertisements. Zarqa focused a discussion of motivation on self-esteem and values. Based on how a person feels about him- or herself, the person "will be motivated primarily to
achieve values that will make him happy or values that will minimize his fears" (nd). So, here we have a basic value of achieving happiness or avoiding pain and these
two become the motives to individuals to do what they do. A person with high self-esteem wants to achieve and is thus motivated by gaining happiness because this will raise
his self-esteem even further. A person with low self-esteem holds a great deal of fear about the world and is thus motivated the need to minimize his fear (Zarqa, nd).
