The degree of fear or anxiety that a child feels is dependent upon many factors. For instance, Owen (2000) reported that what a child sees as frightening has to do with where they are from. Owen (2000) found there may be some universal fears, such as nuclear weapons, war and kidnappers. There are differences, however, based on the culture of a child (Owen, 2000). Inner-city children in the U.S. are most afraid of "gangs, guns, drugs and drive-by shootings" (Owen, 2000, p. 10). Mongolian children were most afraid of dinosaurs, which Owen (2000) attributed to the fact that these children live in the Gobi desert where many skeletons of these creatures have been found. Balinese children are most afraid of shadows, which could be linked to the fact that they are taught strong moral lessons through "eerie shadow puppets" (Owen, 2000, p. 10). Laotian children are most afraid of ghosts while children "growing up among Buddhist principles and culture, dont even flinch at the sight of a mummy" (Owen, 2000, p. 10). The literature consistently states "There is no one cause for anxiety" (The Childrens Center for OCD and Anxiety, 2006; also see National Center for Health and Wellness, 2006). There are many different factors that may contribute to a person developing anxiety (National Center for Health and Wellness, 2006). Three distinct groups of causes of anxiety have been identified: "genetics and early learning, brain biochemistry, and the fight or flight mechanism" (National Center for Health and Wellness, 2006).
