this essay waffles between novels and plays, and finally argues that novels are the most entertaining form of literature. Discussion Plays are wonderful; there is absolutely nothing on earth like
live theater to stir an audience and make them consider things that may never have occurred to them before. Controversial plays (Oleanna comes to mind) send an audience out talking,
arguing, and thinking. Its a shared experience that can ignite real, meaningful debate. But its also very specialized: for two or three hours, an audience sits and watches skilled performers
act out scenes from others lives. But even the best plays cannot go into the meaning of humanity as deeply as novels can, simply because a novelist doesnt have to
fit his or her work into the time constraints demanded by the theater. They dont have to worry that theyve got to make all their points in a few hours.
They can cover years in the lives of their characters and examine relationships, psychology, behavior and beliefs in depth. To illustrate why novels are superior to plays, lets take
a well-known play and consider how much more it could have done if it were a novel. Since theres no point in doing things half-way here, lets take Hamlet. In
