major changes over the last few decades. This has impacted on all citizens especially the poor. The hardship and need to help them has seen increases in the standards of
living in the favelas, usually perceived as the shanty towns, but the same poverty is also a driving force behind the increased involvement of many residents of favelas in drug
trafficking (Zaluar, 2000). For example, in these area the death rate of males between 15 and 29 is 8 time that if the females, most of this is attitude to
violent and drug related crimes (Zaluar, 2000). Ironically it may have been this increased involvement with drugs that has given the residents of these areas sufficient powers
to be seen as important by the political powers, similar homeless people with no permanent shelter are often disregarded in other countries, as well as given them more funds to
aid with the building as well as teach them that individuals can make a difference if they work together. If we look at the way the favelas have developed
these can be seen as a reflection of the social and economic condition as well as the culture in Brazil. The development of these today can be seen as a
community effort, the building are not simply corrugated tin and cardboard, but are sound constructions erected with bricks and concrete (Neuwirth, 2000). The way they are built also belies planning,
the residents will decide what they want visualise it and then build it to that visualisation without the need for formal plans (Neuwirth, 2000). This has meant that are ore
