philosophical stance. Faust The story of the scholar who sells his soul to the devil in order to achieve his desires is a staple in literature and in opera; Gounods
opera, based on Goethes play, is one of the most popular in the repertoire. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, to give him his full name, was born in 1749 and died
in 1832 (Atkins). He began work on Faust in the early 1770s, using both verse and prose to tell the story of a "high-minded scholar" who tries to escape "academic
sterility" through the use of magic (Atkins). When he conjures up a demon to help him in his quest, their first meeting is comic. Faust begs the spirit to appear
and when it does, he panics: Spirit. Who calls to me? Faust [turning away]. Appalling apparition! Spirit. By potent spell hast drawn me here, Hast long been
tugging at my sphere, And now- Faust. Oh woe! I can not bear thy vision! (Goethe). This Spirit vanishes, to be replaced in due course by the devil Mephistopheles,
who is, for a good many people, the most entertaining character in the play. Mephistopheles manipulates Faust so that he "loves and seduces, then deserts and destroys Margarete, a small-town
girl" (Atkins). Margarete later kills the child she conceived with Faust, and atones for the murder by "refusing to be rescued as she is about to be executed for infanticide"
(Atkins). However, at the last moment a voice from above says that she is saved; at the same time, Mephistopheles disappears with Faust, to take him to Hell (Goethe). This
