one womans fears, fears of the night where her husband will come out of the darkness and kill her. The woman is an African American servant and she has no other people but the white people who employ her. She clings to them in the hopes that she will be saved from her husband Jesus. And, perhaps more importantly, she looks to the children to find comfort and safety perhaps in light of the fact that she feels she knows them best, as human beings. In this particular relationship we can see images of a historical significance, images that speak of an Old South, the South where Nancy would feel safe in the shelter of her employers (or masters) and the New South, where she was essentially on her own. One critic indicates that, "The old South, the new South, the reconstructed South--if it has to do with the South, Faulkner wrote about it. Few other writers had the understanding of Southern social structures that he had" and as such "We see the theme of the South, not only individuals in the South, but entire social classes groups and families in the South, in almost all of Faulkners work. Every theme in Faulkner relates back to the South in some way" (William Faulkner). For example, "If he is talking about a child, it is a child in the South. If Faulkner is writing about social structure, racism, class, anything, you almost always find his theme within the context of Southern America" (William Faulkner).
