intriguingly complex characters. To say that Emily was a criminal, or a lunatic or a heroine would be to deny some other aspect of herself, because in truth she
was all of these. Just as all individuals have different aspects of themselves, so too did Emily. First of
all, she was indeed a criminal. She purposefully walked into the pharmacy and demanded arsenic, and furthermore refused to tell anyone for what purpose she required it. It
was many years later when the body of Homer was actually found, neatly laid on the bed as evidence of the apparent loving way in which she had administered the
poison. But following the act itself there had been signs, which the townspeople had chosen to ignore. From the stench which was expelled from the Grierson household to
the nearly vanished Emily herself, no one would say it but all knew what had happened. Emily had killed Homer by giving him poison, and that most definitely makes
her a criminal. Was Emily a lunatic? To suggest so means that she was significantly mentally impaired. I believe this
was the case, but not in the manner which many would believe. I dont think there is any reason to believe that Emily was raging mad and acted in
incoherent or unexplainable ways. But, if by lunatic we mean cunning, deceitful and without serious remorse for her actions, then yes, Emily was a lunatic.
