Southern family, the Compson family, following the Civil War. The novel makes it clear that the Compsons have seen their wealth, land and status slowly erode away. Their story is
told out of chronologically order, as each of three brothers, Benjy, Quentin and Jason becomes the principal voice for instances that occur on three separate days. Throughout the novel, time,
and particularly the past, intrudes into the present as a shaping influence that cannot be avoided. Benjys voice is heard first. Benjy is cognitive impaired and all time is
the same to him. While Faulkner writes Benjys section as occurring in 1928, the event that Benjy is concerned with occurred in 1898, which foreshadows future events in 1910. He
stands at the gate waiting for Caddy, his sister, but it is clear that he had waited in vain for many years. There is no distinction between past and present
or future for Benjy, as he only remembers events that gave him pleasure, not when they occurred. As this suggests, Benjy lives just as much in the past as the
present, as his past is his present, shaping it in ways that he does not understand. Quentin is obsessed with time and his perspective dominates the second section of
the novel. He is caught up in the outdated cultural mythos of the South, where men were suppose to be strong and women were virginal until they were called upon,
through marriage, to produce an heir. When Caddy becomes promiscuous (sometime around 1910), Quentin is devastated and cannot reconcile his present to the standards of the past. Quentin would like
