discusses the film, and the way the character of Lucius develops and grows from a child to a much more mature adolescent. Discussion The plot is much less complex than most of Faulkner. Its 1912, and Boon Hogganbeck (Steve McQueen), who has an unspecified job, possibly a handyman, has decided to take his bosss beautiful new car, a yellow Winton Flyer (the only one in Mississippi) for a joyride, from Jefferson to Memphis and back (Ebert). He persuades the bosss grandson Lucius to join him; later the two find that they have a stowaway, Ned, who is Luciuss second cousin, and black (Ebert). Once they get to Memphis, Boon heads immediately for the bawdy house where his girl Corrie (Sharon Farrell) works (Ebert). He takes Lucius with him, and Corrie is charmed by the boy; he is equally smitten with her. Ned disappears meantime into the black section of town (Ebert). While hes there, he trades the car for a horse, which sets up the main sequence in the film: a horse race where they have to win to get the car back (Ebert). Unfortunately, the horse they enter doesnt seem to be very interested in racing: when they try to figure out whats wrong, one character yells, "HES SLOW!" But Ned knows a secret: the horse will run through almost anything for a sardine! He gets down by the finish line, lets the horse see that he has a little bag of sardines, and the nag becomes a thoroughbred and wins the race-and the car. But when they get home, they have to tell the boss what theyve done. The last shot shows the three of them once again in the car, singing and laughing-except the car is now up on blocks and going nowhere. The book is not ...
