live. In Faulkners tale, the leading character Emily Grierson, is pushed into insanity and homicide by the society pressure placed on her by her community because she is expected to
uphold the expectations for being part of Southern aristocracy. Bambara, similarly, relates the societal factors that motivate Miss Moore, an independently-minded African American woman who seeks to raise the class
consciousness of black children in her community, alerting them to the racial inequalities that existed during the pre-Civil Rights era. Both short stories make use of a narrative voice
that is not the protagonist. In Bambaras story the narrator is Sylvia, a precocious little girl who informs readers early-on that Miss Moore does not fit with societal expectations for
black women or the cultural parameters of her neighborhood. She has "nappy" hair, uses standard English, rather than black vernacular; and wears no make-up (Bambara 115). Sylvia also relates that
Miss Moore was "...boring us silly about what things cost and what our parents make, and how much goes for rent and how money aint divided up right in this
country" (Bambara 116). Realizing that the children are not interested in sociological facts, Miss Moore takes this group of children downtown and they visit F.A.O. Schwartz, a huge and hugely
expensive toy store. The children are amazed, as this gives them a glimpse of another world and lifestyle that is totally alien to them. Miss Moore notes the reactions
of the children and is obviously totally delighted that her plan was successful and that the trip has made a deep impression on them alerting them to societal inequities that
