Starring the early film comedian Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, whose career plummeted when he was falsely accused of rape and associated with a starlets death, Adrift is indicative of Arbuckles considerable talent as a comedian and an early filmmaker. Until the scandal broke that destroyed his career, Arbuckle was one of the "most celebrated and beloved comedians" in American cinema (Kehr, 2006, p. 2.11). Associated with Keystone, Arbuckle was starred in many of their films, which featured innovative stunt work. A prominent stunt in Adrift is when Fatty and Mabels home is dislodged from its foundations and set adrift in the Pacific Ocean, so that the newlyweds wake up to find the home filling up with water. This was filmed using Keystones "140 by 75-foot outdoor stage," which was specially built to facilitate "stunt work and sensational effects" (King, 2007, p. 271). Additionally in this building there was a "20- by 40-foot water tank" that was utilized to create Adrifts illusion that a house was floating out to sea (King, 2007, p. 271). However, Keystone comedies did not depend on entirely on spectacular stunts, as America came to love the characters that came to know through repeated films. For example, Arbuckle was frequently paired with Mabel Normand, a gifted comedian of the era in her own right. Silent screen actors had to convey emotion, as well as personality, by establishing a distinctive physical presence, which is something that Arbuckle, with his rotund body. In his films, he would first approach an attractive woman with the demeanor of an "awkward, ungainly child" but would then glance at the camera (and therefore the audience) with a look of "happy, uninhibited lechery," which is an incongruity that "probably contributed to his image problems when his trial came up" (Kehr, 2006, ...
