fatigue has been ongoing since the 1960s and 1970s (Agrawal and Rising, 2002). Medical residents are particularly susceptible to fatigue. Not only must they struggle to keep up with their academic work they are expected to work long and grueling hours in the clinical environment. Eighty hour work weeks have not been that uncommon! Only recently has there been any concerted effort to address the problems of resident work overload (Agrawal and Rising, 2002). These efforts include petitions to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Patient and Physician Safety and Protection Act (PPSA), limitations that withdraw accreditation of various programs unless work load restrictions are imposed, and even antitrust lawsuits (Agrawal and Rising, 2002). Given all the recent concern it seems safe to suggest the thesis that: medical resident overload has the potential to significantly impact patient well being To investigate this theory we can take two approaches. The first is to turn to the literature on the subject and the second is to conduct studies of our own to assess the relationship between patient well being and medical resident work load. Much of the literature demonstrates that resident workload could be easily reduced with just a few recognitions. The first is that residents often spend a considerable portion of their time, some twenty to forty percent of their time in fact, on "noneducational tasks that could be accomplished by ancillary support staff" (Agrawal and Rising, 2002).
