a reflection of himself, hoping and expecting his son to follow in his steps. According to one author, "Taking a long view of the eons of human existence, it becomes
apparent that rearing our children is as essential to our continued survival as is eating or breathing" (Fathermag.com). In essence, the relationship between father and son is, and always has
been, filled with many things, many emotions, and many needs. There is love and need in many father and son relationships and there are also elements that speak of conflict
and grief. The following paper examines how relationships between fathers and sons can cause conflict and grief as seen in Theodore Roethkes My Papas Waltz, William Faulkners Barn Burning and
Andre Dubus Killings. Fathers and Sons In Roethkes poem, My Papas Waltz, one could well argue that it is a poem about a dysfunction father, a drunk Irishman
perhaps. It is a poem that many people believe is ultimately about abuse, but yet the passionate desire on the part of the boy to be loved by his father.
In all honesty it is not really a poem about abuse but a poem about life and the love that exists between the narrator and the father. The father, although
clearly a man who had been drinking, is a man of vibrant and boisterous qualities. This is seen as he dances around with his son as the son stands on
