In Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman and Tennessee Williams The Glass Menagerie the fathers play a very different role, one in place in the home and the other nowhere around. However, in both cases the father, absent or not, have failed their sons in many ways. The following paper examines this perspective. Fathers: Death of a Salesman and The Glass Menagerie In Death of a Salesman Willy Loman is the father and Biff is one of his sons. There is another son, named Happy, but he is essentially something of a simpleton and more like his father than Biff and as such his character is not as strong in relationship to fathering failures. Willy is a man who has long held the assumption that if he looks good and does his job he will find the American Dream. The truth, however, is that he is not intelligent or deep enough, or noble enough, to achieve that dream. But, even when he feels he has perhaps been wrong, he drills this reality into his sons head. In the beginning of the play one sees how Willy has no respect for his son Biff. He argues with his wife saying "Biff is a lazy bum" and throughout the play never seems to see that Biff is a young man who is essentially lost because of his father and his false notions (Miller 16).
