society. He argues persuasively that the declining status of fathers has significantly affected the manner in which men react to this role. Because of this, Popenoe advocates policies and
reforms that would encourage a return to a traditional family structure. There are multiple viewpoints relative to this topic, however, and the debate encompasses the views of feminists, gays and
lesbians, and also those people who would take the middle ground and look for ways to make the existing trends in family structure function more efficiently. An examination of Popenoes
views, followed by a discussion of alternative perspectives, will illustrate the complexity of this controversy. Popenoes argument states that the status and perception on the importance of the fathers
role has suffered a steady decline, that these assumptions on the unimportance of fathering are wrong, and that reforms should center around policies that encourage a return to traditional family
