have always followed in the footsteps, in one way or another, of their fathers and fathers have often wanted better for their sons. The relationship is a very complex one
that can be nurturing on both parts, and successful. But, they can also be relationships that are considered incredibly difficult with each party misunderstanding the other, and themselves, because of
their own problems with identity. In Khaled Hosseinis novel The Kite Runner the boy/young man/man in the story is constantly at odds with his father, creating a sense of understanding
that they have a very difficult relationship. As the story develops and comes to an end, however, the reader learns that they are merely both human beings trying to do
their best and the characters father was not a bad father, but rather simply not understood by his son. The following paper examines this premise. Father/Son Relationships in
The Kite Runner The main father/son relationship in this book is between the main character, Amir. and his father. The reader is told the story though his eyes, through first
person narrative, and thus they begin to side with him and believe that his father really would have preferred Hassan, the poor boy, as his own son. He describes his
father as a distant man who never seemed to be there for him. He notes how "that was how I escaped my fathers aloofness, in my dead mothers books. That,
and Hassan, of course" (Hosseini 19). There is also a subtle indication that Amir likes Hassans father better, perhaps because he is not always busy working as is Amirs father.
