his father. Like many classic tales, even that of Homers "The Odyssey," the identity of a young man is found through understanding their father, seeking out their father, and becoming
a man on their own. The following paper examines the father in "Smoke Signals" and then examines a real father. Smoke Signals In "Smoke Signals" the primary character
is Victor. Victor has bad memories of his father, an alcoholic who left when he was relatively young. His father has been gone for about 8 years and Victor hears
that he has died. He sets out on a journey to get to that place where his father died, and take care of any things that need handling. His is
an angry young man for he feels his father is a loser, a drunk, and worthless in many respects. He is angry because his father left, but in perhaps reality
he is somewhat angry with his mother, who laid the law down that no more drinking would take place. When that ultimatum was laid down is when Victors father left.
From this one can see that the mother, in her expectations, saw the father as damaging to their child and their family and that he was better off gone.
Victor, angry and in the company of his friend Thomas, arrives at the place his father lived and meets Suzy Song. Suzy Song demonstrates to Victor how he was a
good man, perhaps lost, but a good man and a good friend. In her perceptions Victor begins to grow up and realize that his father was not evil, that his
