begs Hamlet to seek revenge of his death The Big Sleep 1944,1946 Cast: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, John Ridgely, Martha Vickers, Charles Waldron. Producer and Director: Howard Hawks The
father General Sherwood appears once in the movie, and sets the stage for what he wants Marlowe (Bogart) to investigate. He also serves somewhat as a catalyst as
Marlowe meets the two daughters, because Sherwood has sent for him. One girl he meets in the house. The other he meets as he is leaving. Sherwood claims
that he needs some assistance concerning a problem of the younger daughter, Carmen. He claims that someone is trying to blackmail him through some of her actions. Vivian (played
by Becall) is the older of the two, and she tries to guess why Marlowe has been hired. Marlowe is not going to tell her. Miffed at not
getting her way, Vivian complains what today we would call his "attitude." In 1944 when the film was first made, the word of choice would have been "manners."
