search for meaning and his eternal struggle with fate. No matter what Odysseus, or any other human character, does in this epic they are controlled in some way by the
gods and their path seems destined to be completed. The three main human characters, Odysseus, Penelope, and Telemachus, are three people on a path that involves fate. And, it seems
that this fate is controlled by forces unknown to them, that being the fate put in play by the actions and decisions of the gods. With that in mind the
following paper briefly examines some of The Odyssey, pointing out how fate is controlled by the gods, or created by the gods, and how this is still relevant today as
we all seem to struggle with fate and uncontrollable and unforeseen powers. The Odyssey and Fate Despite the fact that this paper request asked that the work only
focus on books 1-9, it should be noted that the entire story speaks of fate as it involves the journeys of Odysseus as they work towards a final culmination of
the fates prescribed. However, putting aside the entirety of the work we focus on the first few books, starting with the position of Odysseus son Telemachus. Telemachus, in the
beginning, feels like he is in a position of complete helplessness. His father has been gone nearly 20 years and he is forced to deal with his mothers suitors. As
the young man of the house he feels it is his responsibility to do something, though he is young and confused. He feels he has no power. He perhaps truly
feels that he is at the hands of some power much larger than himself and much larger than his understanding. Telemachus is assisted by a goddess, Athena. "Athena tells
