In order to look in detail at the way in which destiny plays a significant role in both
Sophocles Oedipus the King and The Epic of Gilgamesh, it might be useful to consider the way in which fate and destiny can be perceived in terms of polytheism, monotheism
and the concept of free will, and how these ideas can be applied to the two works studied. For example, even though destiny is something which is frequently considered in
terms of polytheism, it is also true to say that in monotheistic religions such as Christianity, the exercise of free will is still perceived as being subordinate to the will
of an omnipotent God, and therefore there is considerable debate as to whether the actions of a human being can be genuinely considered as resulting from completely free will.
In other words, if it is accepted that God is
all-powerful and all-knowing, and therefore is aware of past, present and future, then humans must to some extent follow the pattern of existence which God has already created or foreseen
