mercy of the Universe, but that it is an uncaring Universe in which the acts of mortals, whether they are positive or not, have no impact on the greater scheme of things which ultimately rules their fate. In the opening scenes of the narrative, Crane presents a strong contrast between the men who are stranded in the boat and the elements of nature which surround them; the birds, for instance, are completely at home in the wrath of the sea whereas the men are at odds with, and struggling against, the forces of nature. They are alienated both from each other and from the natural world which surrounds them: they perceive Nature as something which has deliberately set out to crush them, as can be seen in their personification of the waves, which they see as having human qualities such as nervousness, anxiety, and the conscious desire to overturn the dinghy. However, it is evident from the viewpoint of the reader that in fact Nature, and the Universe, are devoid of any deliberate intent to harm, or indeed to heal; the sun continues to rise and set, the shore remains indifferent, and what the men see as hostility is in fact only the normal progression of the natural world. At first, they assume that that it is some conscious action of Fate or Destiny which has brought them to their current situation, and they collectively rail at the pointlessness of their existence, wondering why they have been allowed to live, and contribute to the world, only to have their lives snuffed out as if that contribution were worthless.
