Once it reached the intersection, the Caravan collided with another vehicle, but due to the low speed of the impact and the vans incorporated safety features, a potentially deadly
situation had been reduced to a minor traffic mishap (Rogers 67). Or so you would think. Shaken but unharmed, Sanders turned to check on the passengers of the van,
his three children that he had so carefully buckled in before the trip began. Sons David, age 9, and Matthew, age 10, reported no injuries from their positions in
the backseat of the van. There was no response from Alison, Sanders 7 year-old daughter who had been riding in the front passenger seat beside her father. Alison
was unconscious, injured not by the force of the impact itself, but instead by the force of the passenger sides air bag when it automatically deployed. She later died,
killed by the very feature that was designed to save her life (Rogers 67). The inclusion of automobile air bags as standard equipment is a relatively new concept, having been
in wide use for only the past decade. Chrysler was the first American automobile manufacturer to incorporate this safety device when it offered a drivers side air bag as
standard equipment on its 1988 New Yorker (The Washington Post N01). Advertised as the newest and most innovative safety feature of the era, the installation of automobile air bags
